A retaining wall is only as good as what's underneath it. We excavate to firm ground, install and compact a gravel base, and bury the first course below grade. Drainage stone and perforated pipe behind the wall let water escape instead of building up pressure that pushes the wall out of line.

Common questions
The usual causes are a weak base, no drainage behind the wall, or a wall built taller than the block system allows. Water trapped in the soil adds a lot of pressure, which is why drainage is part of every wall we build.
Most residential walls are under four feet. Taller walls may need reinforcement such as geogrid, and some communities require a permit or engineered design. We'll let you know what applies to your project.
